I just loved that laid-back sensory-rich lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s exactly how I spent my very own week in Provence, plus plenty of tips to help you craft an epic trip of your own.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b><strong>Week in Provence Itinerary Logistics&nbsp;<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3><b><strong>Where is Provence&nbsp;<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provence isn\u2019t just one town \u2013 it\u2019s an entire region in the southeast of France, tucked between the Rh\u00f4ne River and the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of location, it\u2019s north of Marseille, west of the French Riviera, and just a few hours by train from Paris, making it easy to add to a France itinerary.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area is made up of dozens of towns and villages, each with its own character \u2013 from larger cultural hubs like Avignon and Aix-en-Provence to tiny medieval hill towns like Gordes and Roussillon, and coastal gems like Cassis. The magic of Provence is that you don\u2019t just stick to one spot \u2013 you road trip (or train hop) your way around, stringing together a mix of cities, villages, and countryside.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b><strong>How to Get to Provence&nbsp;<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For your Provence itinerary, you&#8217;ll of course need to get there first! And thankfully,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> getting to Provence is easier than you might think \u2013 and you have a few options depending on where you\u2019re coming from. The region is served by several airports, with Marseille Provence Airport being the biggest and most convenient for most travelers. The high-speed TGV can get you to Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, or Marseille in around 3 hours, which is perfect if you want to skip the hassle of airports and rental cars for the start of your trip.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of cars \u2013 renting a car is highly recommended if you want to explore the smaller villages and countryside, since public transport doesn\u2019t reach all the hill towns and lavender fields.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provence is also easy to reach by car from other parts of France \u2013 it\u2019s a 2 &#8211; 3 hour drive from Lyon or Montpellier and just under 10 hours from Paris if you prefer a scenic road trip. Once you\u2019re there, having a car gives you the freedom to hop between villages, vineyards, and viewpoints at your own pace \u2013 which is honestly the best way to experience the region.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were coming from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apassionandapassport.com\/cinque-terre-itinerary-3-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>Cinque Terre<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which ended up being a super long travel day. We took the train from Monterosso to Genoa (where we got some much-needed snacks), then hopped on another train from Genoa to Nice, with a short stop in Ventimiglia along the way. Combining Cinque Terre with my Provence itinerary and the French Riviera probably wasn\u2019t the best idea I\u2019ve ever had, but hey \u2013 we made it work! Just know it can be done!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b><strong>How to Get Around Provence&nbsp;<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><b><strong>Renting a Car<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I noted above, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apassionandapassport.com\/rental-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>renting a car<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is by far the easiest way to explore Provence, especially if you wanna hit the hilltop villages, lavender fields, and vineyards at your own pace. I mean, it\u2019s a Provence road trip afterall! Driving gives you the freedom to wander down winding country roads, stop at viewpoints, and explore towns that aren\u2019t easy to reach by public transport. Daytime highs can reach 85\u201395\u00b0F (29\u201335\u00b0C), especially inland, so be prepared for intense heat (and slather on that sunscreen). Coastal areas along the French Riviera are slightly cooler (hooray!) but busier (womp womp).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>A note on lavender season:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If seeing lavender fields is a priority during your week in Provence (like it was for me!), aim for late June through mid July, depending on the year. The most famous fields are around Valensole Plateau, Luberon, and Sault, so plan your route accordingly. Depending on the heat, some lavender fields will be harvested earlier than others, so you may need to drive around to find patches still in bloom.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For reference, I planned our Provence itinerary for early July and had really great weather! Yes, it was hot, especially inland, and we unfortunately came across a lot of bees at our hotel pools, but it didn\u2019t stop us from enjoying the sun-soaked afternoons, relaxing by the pool, and exploring nearby villages. Daytime highs usually sit around 50\u201360\u00b0F (10\u201316\u00b0C), while nights can drop into the 30s\u201340s\u00b0F (0\u20135\u00b0C). It\u2019s too cold for lavender or beach days, but perfect for exploring villages and cultural sites without the crowds, plus accommodations are often cheaper.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b><strong>Is a week in Provence enough?<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I certainly think so! Our Provence itinerary was exactly a week, and we were able to visit half a dozen villages and charming cities, go market shopping, run through the lavender fields, go paddleboating on the stunning Verdon Gorge, and eat to our hearts\u2019 content. You\u2019ll likely need over a month to even scratch the surface! I\u2019ve included the ones we visited, but just know there are SO many Provence itinerary iterations you\u2019ll come across on your research. I recommend a combination of small towns and larger cities so you don\u2019t get bored, and of course a little time on the Mediterranean (my favorite)!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to shorten this Provence road trip to 5 days, I\u2019d stick to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and L\u2019Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (and the areas nearby). This gives you a perfect balance of nature, countryside drives, and charming villages, without feeling rushed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I really recommend a full week in Provence so you can add Cassis at the end for a taste of the Mediterranean, cliffside views, and a few relaxing beach or harbor hours!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b><strong>Where to Stay in Provence&nbsp;<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing a home base for your Provence itinerary really depends on the kind of trip you want to have \u2013 whether you\u2019re chasing villages, vineyards, or the coast. This makes it easy to see a mix of villages, countryside, and even the coast without feeling like you\u2019re spending all your time in the car (the absolute worst).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some hotels are absolutely gorgeous, and come with a hefty price tag. I recommend thinking about how much time you wanna enjoy the hotels, or if you\u2019d rather be out exploring. We stayed in modest places for this trip, but I think I\u2019d prefer splurging a bit more next time and give us time to soak in the charm and relax.<\/span> This trip was very go-go-go, and while I&#8217;m glad we got to see and do so much, sometimes our bodies just crave rest (at a nice hotel with a stunning pool, haha)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>For our 7-day Provence road trip, we stayed in three separate areas and took day trips from each:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/searchresults.en.html?city=-1454083&amp;aid=2155250&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>Moustiers-Sainte-Marie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Perfect if you want to wake up to lavender fields and hilltop village views. You\u2019ll need to walk in a bit to get the view \u2013 but once you spot it, it\u2019s magic.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Lavandes Angelevin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A picture-perfect combo of lavender <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sunflowers, just 15 minutes from the stone house. We skipped this one since we already have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apassionandapassport.com\/sunflower-field-bay-area-half-moon-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>sunflower fields back home in California<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but if you don\u2019t \u2013 go!<\/span><\/li><li><b>Other Fields Along Route de la Lavande<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Honestly, the whole plateau is covered in fields. Drive around, pull off when you see a pretty spot, and just wander. Some people even rent bikes to explore more slowly.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We visited the tiny town of Valensole afterwards, and to be quite honest, didn\u2019t find much there. I\u2019m not sure if we visited during an off time (or if it was just too early before the town woke up), but I wouldn\u2019t mind skipping it next time. Especially since there\u2019s so many other charming villages nearby!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><b><strong>Afternoon: Explore Moustiers-Sainte-Marie<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019re done smelling the lavender (and taking a million pictures), it\u2019s time to explore the charming village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moustiers is one of those villages that looks like it was designed for postcards \u2013 pastel shutters, cobblestone lanes, and dramatic cliffs rising up behind it. Legend says it was placed there by a knight returning from the Crusades, and it\u2019s become the town\u2019s symbol.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Notre-Dame de Beauvoir Chapel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: If you\u2019re up for a climb (about 262 stone steps), head up to this small chapel above the town. It makes the whole village feel extra fairytale-like.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lunch or coffee in the square<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Take a break in one of the caf\u00e9s in Place de l\u2019\u00c9glise, perfect for people-watching and soaking up the atmosphere.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>\u00c9glise Notre-Dame de l\u2019Assomption<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Right in the heart of town, this Romanesque church is worth stepping inside for a quick look.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a bit of extra time, you could also browse the weekly market (if your visit falls on a Friday morning\/early afternoon by chance).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Where to Stay: Moustiers-Sainte-Marie&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b><strong>Day 2: Verdon Gorge and Beyond<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><b><strong>Morning: Paddling on Verdon Gorge<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No trip to Provence is complete without seeing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apassionandapassport.com\/verdon-gorge-kayaking-and-paddle-boating-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>Verdon Gorge<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often called the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Canyon of France<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The turquoise water is absolutely unreal in person (don\u2019t just trust me, see it for yourself!). And WHOA \u2013 I\u2019m so glad we did! We had such a fun morning paddling around and taking in the views.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apassionandapassport.com\/verdon-gorge-kayaking-and-paddle-boating-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>entire blog post dedicated to our time paddling around Verdon Gorge<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (go check that out!), but here\u2019s a few quick notes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rent a kayak or paddle boat right at the bridge at Pont du Galetas (the most popular access point). Rentals usually cost about \u20ac20 &#8211; \u20ac25 for an hour and go up if you want longer. Kayaks, canoes, and pedal boats are all available.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July and August, lines can get long, so aim to arrive by 9:30 &#8211; 10am if you want to avoid waiting.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expect to paddle about 2 km into the gorge \u2013 the cliffs rise dramatically above you, and it\u2019s pure magic.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no facilities once you\u2019re in the gorge, so bring snacks, drinks, sunscreen, and water shoes if you\u2019ve got them. The rocky edges aren\u2019t fun barefoot. We stocked up on drinks and snacks in town the day before (there\u2019s not tons at Verdon Gorge, although a few options for drinks and ice cream which we happily bought afterwards).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming is allowed, but the water is chilly even in summer \u2013 refreshing after paddling!<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yes, wear that bright swimsuit \u2013 it pops against the blue water in photos.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><b><strong>Late Morning: Scenic Drive<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve still got energy, take the Route des Cr\u00eates (Ridge Road). The 23 km loop is packed with jaw-dropping viewpoints. Some of the most famous stops include Belv\u00e9d\u00e8re de la Carelle and Balcon de la Mescla. Allow 1.5\u20132 hours with photo stops.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We decided to skip this because we were already pretty knocked out after all that time in the sun at the gorge and my husband didn\u2019t wanna add extra time to our already pretty long drive to L\u2019Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (our next base).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><b><strong>Afternoon: Stop at L\u2019Occitane en Provence<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re in Provence! Meaning you\u2019ve gotta stop at L\u2019Occitane en Provence! On your way out of the gorge area, make a quick stop at the L\u2019Occitane factory in Manosque (about an hour\u2019s drive).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can book a tour in advance (around \u20ac6 per person) or just shop at the boutique. It\u2019s one of those places that are right on the way so might as well go check it out! We picked up a few hand creams and they all smelled so good!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><b><strong>Afternoon: Optional Detours<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Apt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This town is famous for its candied fruit (fruits confits) and local markets. If you\u2019re there on a Saturday morning, the market is a must-see, offering cheeses, olives, lavender products, and regional specialties. It\u2019s also a good lunch\/snack stop before heading to L\u2019Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Saignon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A picturesque hilltop village with cobblestone streets, small caf\u00e9s, and panoramic views over the Luberon valley. It\u2019s one of the largest in Provence (it\u2019s huge!), with antiques, Proven\u00e7al linens, soaps, fresh produce, cheeses, olives, and tons more spilling throughout the town. We didn\u2019t buy much (no space in our small suitcases since we were traveling for 3 weeks in a carry-on), but it was still super fun to look at everything and even more fun to people-watch!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PS \u2013 if you\u2019re visiting L\u2019Isle-sur-la-Sorgue for the market and not staying overnight like we were, it will be extremely difficult to find a parking spot. And if tomorrow happens to be Sunday for you, you can easily switch around Day 3 and Day 4! Or even swing by the market on Day 5 before heading to Aix-en-Provence if that\u2019s when Sunday is.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had lunch at Restaurant Le Vivier, just outside the center. It\u2019s a Michelin-recognized spot right on the river \u2013 perfect if you\u2019re looking for a special meal (you\u2019re in Provence \u2013 that\u2019s reason enough for something special!). It was recommended to us by friends (they raved about it), and it was worth the short drive outta town. Otherwise, there are plenty of caf\u00e9s and bistros in town.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><b><strong>Afternoon: Driving Loop Through the Luberon Villages<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After lunch, hit the road for a mini loop through some of the most charming villages in the Luberon. Provence is perfect for scenic drives and aimless wandering through its villages, so that\u2019s exactly what I recommend doing next! The walk to the spring is short and scenic, though this spot can feel touristy, so plan for just a quick stop.<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>M\u00e9nerbes (20 min from Fontaine): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quiet, picture-perfect hilltop village surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Picasso once lived here (yes, THE Picasso), and it\u2019s a lovely place for a stroll with fewer crowds.<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bonnieux (15 min from M\u00e9nerbes): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A gorgeous medieval village with some of the best valley views in Provence. Climb up to the old church for a sweeping panorama, or simply wander the cobblestone streets with a gelato or coffee in hand.<\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lourmarin (optional, 30 min from Bonnieux): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If time allows, continue to Lourmarin, one of the most stylish villages in the region. Known for its Renaissance ch\u00e2teau, boutique shops, and lively Friday market, it\u2019s a fun spot to end the afternoon.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psst: If you\u2019d rather visit Avignon instead, this is the perfect day to do so since it\u2019s only about a 35 minute drive west from L\u2019Isle -sur-la-Sorgue. BUT I heard Avignon is pretty city-like and we wanted more of a village storybook feel, so we skipped it! Saint-R\u00e9my-de-Provence also isn\u2019t far from L\u2019Isle -sur-la-Sorgue, but we couldn\u2019t fit everything in and had to pick and choose, so again, skipped it! Saint-Remy is further from the other villages, so we prioritized the ones in the Luberon Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From here, drive back toward L\u2019Isle-sur-la-Sorgue for the evening (1 hour from Lourmarin, or 35 min if heading straight back from Bonnieux).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Where to Stay: L\u2019Isle -sur-la-Sorgue or nearby town<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b><strong>Day 4:&nbsp; Rousillon and Gordes&nbsp;<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time to visit two of the most popular villages in all of Provence \u2013 Roussillon and Gordes! Roussillon is famous for its ochre cliffs (you can walk the Ochre Trail for insane colors), while Gordes is your classic hilltop village with sweeping valley views. I swear, every single building in town is one of these few colors! It sits in the heart of Provence\u2019s Luberon Regional Park and is famous for the ochre deposits that were once mined here. Nearly every building in town is plastered with ochre pigments, giving the streets a warm glow that changes with the light. Safe to say I absolutely loved photographing it!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by strolling through the narrow lanes lined with caf\u00e9s, art galleries, and little shops selling local ceramics and ochre pigments you can take home (Atelier Marchand de couleurs was one of my favorites). The whole place feels like a natural art palette.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best things to do here is walk the Ochre Trail (Sentier des Ocres), a short, easy hike (choose between a 30 or 60 minute loop) that winds through the ochre cliffs and abandoned quarries. The rock formations come in surreal shapes and fiery colors that contrast beautifully with the green pines above. Here, take your time strolling the cobblestone streets, popping into boutiques, and soaking in the sweeping views of the Luberon valley below. We ended up relaxing with drinks at Airelles Gordes once we got sick of the summer sun, and honestly, I could\u2019ve sat there all afternoon just taking in those incredible views.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I noticed that Gordes has a much more polished, upscale, and chic vibe compared to some of the other hilltop villages in Provence. It\u2019s beautifully maintained, with golden-stone buildings, neatly cobbled streets, and elegant boutiques and caf\u00e9s. While it still has that classic Proven\u00e7al charm, it feels a bit more refined, whereas villages like Roussillon or Moustiers-Sainte-Marie feel more quaint, rustic, and lived-in. It definitely pays to visit them all to see the differences (kinda like on our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apassionandapassport.com\/puglia-road-trip-itinerary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>Puglia road trip<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 another great region to road trip in Europe)!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, Gordes is more about aimlessly strolling, sipping ros\u00e9, and taking in the sweeping valley views than actual things to check off. But here\u2019s a few if you\u2019d like to structure out your afternoon a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gordes Viewpoint:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the classic photo spot you\u2019ve seen in all the IG posts and postcards. Stop here for a panoramic shot of the town clinging to the cliffs. We stopped here on our way out since the lighting was nicer later in the afternoon. Put in \u201cTown View Point Gordes\u201d on Google Maps and you\u2019ll find it right away. Note that there\u2019s a small parking spot a bit further down the road, but it does get busy. We LOVED this spot, and after seeing the hotel grounds a bit, we kinda wish we had splurged and stayed here for a night!<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Saint Firmin Palace and Cellars:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Step inside this Renaissance palace to explore its underground rooms and wine cellars carved right into the rock.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Village des Bories (just outside town):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An open-air museum showcasing traditional dry-stone huts that once served as shelters and farm buildings.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Abbaye Notre-Dame de S\u00e9nanque:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A working abbey surrounded by lavender fields (best viewed late June to mid-July). It\u2019s one of the most photographed lavender spots in Provence (for good reason). Enjoy the fountains, lively caf\u00e9s, and people-watching.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Explore Vieil Aix (Old Town):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wander the narrow streets, charming squares, artisan shops, and pastel-colored fa\u00e7ades. Aimless wandering here is a must!<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Visit the Markets:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aix has fantastic markets for fresh produce, flowers, olive oil, cheeses, and local specialties. Whatever you do, don\u2019t miss the Calanques!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Port de Cassis<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The harbor in Cassis (Port de Cassis) is the heart of the town and the perfect spot to hang out. We grabbed a table by the water and ended up people (and boat) watching for way longer than planned. For food, I\u2019d go with Chez Gilbert if you want a proper bouillabaisse or Le Grand Large for fresh oysters and grilled fish. A lot of places do prix-fixe menus at lunch that are way more affordable than dinner, which is perfect if you want to splurge on seafood (and maybe a glass of crisp white wine) without blowing your whole budget.<\/span> We loved sharing a meat and cheese board a bit before sunset!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The port gets busy, but that\u2019s part of the vibe \u2013 colorful buildings, packed terraces, everyone lingering over long meals. And if you\u2019re planning to see the Calanques, the boat tours leave right from here, so it\u2019s super convenient. We found ourselves at the port multiple times a day!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Swim or sunbathe at Plage de la Grande Mer<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome to the Mediterranean! Time to take a tip! Plage de la Grande Mer, the main beach in Cassis, is just a quick stroll from the harbor so it\u2019s super easy to get to. It\u2019s family-friendly, with calm water and gorgeous views of the cliffs. Just know it\u2019s pebbly (not sandy), so water shoes really come in handy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beach can get absolutely packed by midday in summer, so if you want a quieter vibe, head down in the morning or swing by closer to sunset. Shade is basically nonexistent, so bring an umbrella or plan to rent a sunbed early. There are a few kiosks and caf\u00e9s nearby for snacks, but plenty of people pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re after clearer water and a slightly less chaotic scene, walk over to Plage du Bestouan. This smaller cove is rockier, but it\u2019s perfect for swimming and snorkeling \u2013 and you\u2019ll spot more locals than tourists. But don\u2019t be fooled \u2013 it\u2019s still wildly crowded.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parking near the beaches can be a real headache in peak season, so if you\u2019re driving, aim for early morning. And yes, there\u2019s even a Havaianas shop if you desperately need some new flip flops. Grab a Tarte Trop\u00e9zienne from La Tarte Trop\u00e9zienne P\u00e2tisserie Viennoiserie Sandwicherie Pain, a speciality of the region.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t miss the local market on Wednesdays and Fridays. It\u2019s full of fresh produce, fragrant herbs, artisanal soaps, and colorful Proven\u00e7al textiles. Too bad I was traveling carry-on only!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Take a boat tour to the Calanques<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By far the #1 thing to do in Cassis \u2013 the famous turquoise Calanques! And the easiest and most relaxing way to see the famous Calanques is by boat, which is what we did \u2013 my husband isn\u2019t exactly a hiker (fair enough, it\u2019s his vacation too). Tours leave regularly from the Cassis harbor and range from 45 minutes to 2 hours. The most common route is from the Port-Miou parking area, passing through Calanque de Port-Pin and continuing to En-Vau.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can either hike yourself or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/cassis-l36948\/cassis-3-calanques-national-park-guided-hiking-tour-t401887\/?partner_id=ZTTLTQC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>join a guided tour with a local<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (who will undoubtedly know all the best scenic spots) \u2013 that\u2019s what I\u2019d do if I was traveling solo <\/span><b>(<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like when I hiked the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apassionandapassport.com\/seven-hanging-valleys-trail-algarve-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><b>Seven Hanging Valleys Trail<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Portugal)!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Distance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: ~6 km round-trip (3.7 miles)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 2.5 &#8211; 3.5 hours depending on pace and stops<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Difficulty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Moderate to challenging \u2013 rocky terrain, some steep sections, and little shade.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come prepared! Wear proper shoes, bring plenty of water, and go early in the day to beat the heat and crowds. The reward? One of the most beautiful spots on the Mediterranean. Scenic hiking at its best!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Drive the Route des Cr\u00eates and stop at Cap Canaille<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This cliffside road between Cassis and La Ciotat is one of the most scenic drives in all of France, with stunningly jaw-dropping views of the Mediterranean. Just be cautious: the road is narrow and winding, with no lights, so avoid driving it after dark.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Wine Tasting<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have extra time (and didn\u2019t drink enough wine earlier on your Provence road trip, wink wink), visit a nearby vineyard like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clos Sainte Magdeleine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, located above the sea (meaning amazing views). Cassis is one of the oldest AOCs in France and is especially known for its crisp white wines.
